‘Unashamed’ by Emily Bollon
Although this song was written by my 18-year-old self, the message of it continues to be relevant for me today.
Not too long after arranging ‘Unashamed’ to be sung by a choir, I started University and co-founded the University of Surrey Gospel Choir with a friend. As arguably one of the most trying times in a person’s faith journey and relationship with God, University became a beautiful setting for this song to be sung.
I remember piling into the back of our church leader’s Land Rover and splitting the group of students into 5 harmony parts as we made our way to church each week! Little did I know that those tweaks to the arrangement would give ‘Unashamed’ the edge it needed to become and award-winning song in just 4 year’s time*!
I guess the lyrics kind of speak for themselves. I long to live each day of my life unashamed of my mate Jesus, and all that he’s done – and continues to do – in my life.
*The University of Surrey Gospel Choir’s performance of ‘Unashamed’ at the University Gospel Choir of the Year competition finals won us 1st Runners Up, and I was awarded the Best Unsigned British Gospel Songwriter of the Year 2013.
